The Young Adult Department offers a variety of services for teenagers in the community including a large up-to-date collection of the best and most popular books being written for young adults today.
Teens, ages 11 - 17, have a room of their own at the library with work tables, and a couch for comfortable seating.
Our collection focuses primarily on fiction and pleasure reading, though we do have a good number of books students find helpful for assignments on such topics as science experiments, how to be a better writer, and biographies of prominent people.
In addition to books, our collection includes subscriptions to close to twenty periodicals for teens including computer gaming magazines, skateboarding, sports, humor, music and fashion. Teens may borrow these for two weeks or enjoy them here.
We have three computer terminals in the department. Teens may sign up for free internet access, word processing, and access to other resources such as our databases and catalog, and an online encyclopedia. Turns are 30 minutes long and students with homework to do get priority use of the machines.
Teachers are welcomed and encouraged to bring 6th through 12th grade classes for library visits. The young adult librarian will introduce students to library services and present booktalks on new books in the collection. (Booktalks tell just enough of a story to pique a reader's interest. Think trailer to a film.) Also, upon request, she will teach students library research skills or help them prepare for a particular assignment such as a research paper. Teachers can outline their specific needs when they make their appointment.
We offer a variety of programs and special events for teens. These have included poetry readings, book discussion groups, film showings, holiday parties, game nights, concerts and author visits and a summer reading club. Teens in grades 6-12, join us for Playstation game time on Fridays at 3pm. Discover your talents by playing Rock Band and Singstar, or bring your own PS2 compatible sports games.
