Mango Languages now with 23 more languages!
Mango Languages has now added new languages including:
Arabic (Leventine),Farsi, Pashto, Urdu, Turkish, Hebrew, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Tagalog, .Hindi, and Irish. This is added to the already available Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Greek, and Italian. English as a Second Language courses are also available include ESL Spanish, ESL French, ESL Italian, ESL German, ESL Russian, ESL Mandarin Chinese,. ESL Cantonese Chinese,. ESL Japanese, ESL Greek,. ESL Arabic, ESL Korean, and ESL Vietnamese, ESL Portuguese, and ESL Polish.

http://hoboken.bccls.org/. Patrons can use Mango in the library or online from home by typing in their library card number. Mango Basics allows you to the learn the fundamentals of the language. Mango Complete allows you to learn certain languages more in depth. Please be aware that Mango Complete works with Flash 9 and higher and Mango Basics requires Flash 10. By creating a user profile you can bookmark where you left off in a lesson and return to that point for your next session.
In addition to Mango, the library is offers Rosetta Stone’s English as Second Language for in the library use. Hoboken Library Card Holders can make an appointment for a session at the reference desk.
Circulation Policy Changes
The Hoboken Public Library is pleased to announce that beginning on October 3rd there will be a reduction in the late fees for DVDs to $1 per day per DVD. All items without holds (items on request for another patron) will be able to be renewed up to 2 times.
FAX services are available on the second floor. Please see the reference desk to make an appointment to have an item sent or received.

FAX Use Policy
The Library will not be responsible for the loss of documents, either sent or received, due to equipment failure on our part or on the part of the telecommunications company or other FAX providers.
In addition, although every effort will be made to insure privacy of handled documents (especially received documents), the Library and its employees will not be responsible for the loss or privacy of FAXED documents.
New Children's Librarian: Lois Gross
The Hoboken Public Library welcomes Lois Gross, Senior Chldren's Librarian, to the team. Lois is a Philadelphia native, but comes to New Jersey by way of Colorado and Florida where she has worked in libraries for more than 35 years. In addition to her work in public libraries and the Library for the Blind network, Lois is a book reviewer and a juror for the KidsFirst film review program, which will be a monthly program at the Hoboken Library, starting in the fall. Lois is a professional storyteller and will be hosting an after school storytime for children, ages 4 to 6, every Thursday afternoon at 3:30 PM. She is looking forward to working with schools in Hoboken to make the library a destination for all of the city's kids, families, and educators. Stop by the Children's Department on the third floor to say hello to Lois and all the helpful Children's Department staff.
Loan Procedure Change
We have streamlined our loan procedures in order to provide better service to our patrons. As part of the changes Hoboken items will be checked out to patrons upon their request through the loan system. Items from other libraries have always been checked out in advanced.
Historical Building Capital Preservation Grant
The Hoboken Public Library has received a 2008 Historical Building Capital Preservation Grant from the NJ Historic Trust for $750,000. Aiming to preserve NJ Cultural and Historic Sites, the grant supports repair, restoration and rehabilitation of historic resources for continued use. Our library was the third public library established in NJ under the NJ General Library Act of 1894 and the first to be built under this act. Albert Beyer designed the library building in Italian Renaissance style. The library is committed to preserving the historical integrity of the building while making us fully ADA compliant. The Library is also planning renovation of our basement space, including the creation of a community programming room as well repairs to the exterior of the building. This work will be part of a $6 million renovation the library hopes to achieve over the next few years.
Ona Gritz Winner of the Amy Job Partnership Award
Ona Gritz, the Young Adult Librarian at the Hoboken Public Library, has received the 2009 NJLA/NJASL Amy Job Partnership Award in recognition of the cooperative relationship she has cultivated between the Hoboken Public Library and the Hoboken High School Library. The Job Family has donated $200 to the library in honor of the award. Ona was nominated by Michelle McGreivey, the Hoboken High School Librarian. Ona has hosted a series of poetry readings for the past several years in honor of Black History, Women’s History, and Poetry month where local Middle and High School students read the poems of famous poets and their own works. A published poet herself, Ona has been inspirational in bringing poetry to life for the town’s teens. She also this year organized a class to come for a viewing of the 2009 historic presidential inauguration. Ona regularly coordinates class visits to the library for teens in Middle and High School so that they can become familiar with the library’s resources and gain a better understanding of research techniques. She will officially receive the award on April 28th in Long Branch at the NJLA Honors and Awards Reception.
New YA Computers
The library has three new computers and a new printer in the Young Adult Department which were purchased as part of a Gates Foundation Grant.
Kill A Watt
Steve Fahmie has donated a Kill A Watt device to the library that can be borrowed from the circulation desk. It assesses how efficient electric appliances are and allows calculation of daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly electric expenses.
Digital Audio Books Now Available for Mac Users
We are pleased to announce that Mac users, will now be able to join PC users, in accessing our popular downloadable audiobook service ListenNJ. With Overdrive Media Console for Mac, Over Drive MP 3 Audiobooks can now be downloaded and enjoyed by Mac computer users. The Burn Wizard that is built-in can be used to burn MP3 Audiobooks onto CD. The transfer wizard allows you to transfer the audiobooks onto Apple Devices such as Ipods and Iphones. You can access ListenNJ from the Audio Materials section of the Hoboken Public Library website.
Hoboken History Goes Digital
In addition to our fine print collection of Hoboken history, the Library now offers digital images of city records and historical events. Patrons can make appointments with the library staff to view the images stored on an external computer hard drive. The Library has also partnered with Rutgers University and the New Jersey Digital Highway project to offer nearly five hundred photographs of Hoboken history on the internet.
