Hoboken Public Library Employment Announcements

Reference Librarian. FULL TIME, 35 HRS.
The publicly-funded Hoboken Public Library, located in Hudson County, NJ, is part of an exciting, diverse, vibrant city of 50,000 people.  The City of Hoboken and the Hoboken Public Library have a rich history that we seek to preserve and celebrate.  The Hoboken Public Library seeks a Full Time Reference Librarian. Responsibilities include providing general reference duties, overseeing the libraries history collection, and assistance with collection development. 

Specific responsibilities:

  1. Reference Questions (primary person for answering history related questions both in person and via email)
  2. Oversee History Collection (vertical files, photographs, microfilm, book collection, maps); maintain order of collection and oversee purchase and acquisition of new materials
  3. Oversee digitization and preservation of History Collection
  4. Assist with plan for History Collection Development and Maintenance
  5. Oversee ordering of book boxes for history books
  6. Oversee purchasing microfilm for history collection
  7. Cataloging of new history materials added to the collection
  8. Oversee the Reference Assistants (when other Reference Librarians are not in)
  9. Tours of Reference Department for school groups of history collection
  10. Assist with creation of History related programs and displays
  11. Collection Development of DVD, CD, and Spanish Language Collection
  12. Linking and Weeding of Periodicals.
  13. Assist with weeding reference and nonfiction collection
  14. Format and send bimonthly email newsletter using Constant Contact
  15. Proctor exams for Hoboken Residents
  16. Computer Sign in and assist with computer/technology questions when one of the technical staff is not available
  17. Shelving of History and Reference Collection.


Qualifications/Requirements:
Candidate must possess a MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited graduate school and have a New Jersey Professional Librarian’s Certificate. At least one evening per week and two Saturdays per month are required. 

Also the ideal candidate will possess:

•              A knowledge and interest in historical research and preservation
•              Well-developed written and oral communication skills
•              Excellent presentation skills
•              A passion for and ability to serve people of diverse backgrounds
•              Desire to work in a team-centered environment; flexibility to assist other departments as needed
•              Proficiency with Word, Excel and Power Point
•              Knowledge of Constant Contact and Polaris a plus
•              Spanish language skills would be helpful but are not required

Compensation:
Salary $51,783+ commensurate with experience. Full benefits package. Civil Service Position. NJ Residency Required.

Teen Librarian Part Time
Position Offered: Part-Time Teen Librarian
Hours: 25 Hours weekly split between two locations, including some evenings and weekends
Education: MLIS/MLS

Position Overview: Under the supervision of the Teen Librarian, performs varied professional and technical work for the Teen Department, which serves teens from 6th-12th grades. This includes circulation services, reference and reader's advisory guidance, technical services, and teen programming.  Supervises the Teen Department in the absence of the Teen Librarian.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Teen Librarian in providing reference, digital literacy and research instruction,  and reader's advisory to teens, parents, and teachers
  • Assists and instructs patrons in using library services, resources, equipment, and facilities
  • Understands and is able to perform all jobs related to lending library materials, registering patrons, receiving and processing reserves and hold requests
  • Assists in planning and conducting teen programs, including makerspace programs
  • Assists in selecting materials for acquisition and withdrawal, as assigned
  • Conducts outreach to teenagers in community venues, and helps maintain relationships with community organizations also serving teenagers
  • Assists with maintaining statistics on Teen Department activities, and provides periodic reports of same, as directed
  • Assists in preparing bibliographies, flyers, displays, and social media publicity for the Teen Department
  • Assists the Teen Librarian in training and overseeing the work of teen department staff
  • Assists with circulation, reference, and technical services in other departments as needed
  • Supervises all library operations on occasion, as assigned
  • Assists with developing partnership with area schools, community organizations and agencies serving youth
  • Performs other duties, as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of public library services and programs, especially teen services and YA literature
  • Comfortable working with teenagers
  • Familiarity with modern library technologies, including downloadable and e-resources
  • Ability to learn equipment of HPL Creation Space
  • Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public, with the library's business contacts, and with other staff
  • Ability to organize work for efficient use of time
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to keep records accurately
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to understand and interpret library policies
  • Ability to shelve materials and perform some lifting
  • Bilingual a plus

Compensation:
Salary $28.46 per hour. Civil Service Position. NJ Residency Required.
