Head of Children’s Services/Librarian 2 – Hoboken Public Library
The Hoboken Public Library is seeking a creative, energetic, and innovative librarian with passion for library services to lead the growing Children’s Department.
Position Overview: Leads Hoboken Public Library services to children, including reference and readers’ advisory, collection development and maintenance, circulation and children’s programming.  Reports directly to Library Director.  Schedule includes evening and weekend hours.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supervises Children’s Collection and Services, manages day-to-day operations of Children’s Department
  • Provides reference and readers’ advisory services
  • Plans and conducts children's programs, coordinates all children’s programming and  supervises use of space
  • Maintains statistics on Children's Department activities, and creates statistical  reports of same, as directed
  • Prepares bibliographies, flyers, bulletin boards, displays, and publicity for the Children's Department
  • Works with Library Director and Outreach staff on creating promotional materials related to Children’s Services
  • Works with local schools and community organizations to promote and coordinate services to children
  • Supervises and trains  7 professional and clerical staff of the department
  • Assists with circulation, reference, and technical services in other departments as needed
  • Supervises all library operations on occasion, as assigned, serves as a member of library management team

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • ALA accredited MLS and NJ Professional Librarian Certification
  • At least 3 years of successful full time employment in the Children’s Room, public library experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of children’s literature, thorough knowledge, enthusiasm and love for  public library services and programs to children
  • Familiarity with modern library technologies, including downloadable and e-resources
  • Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public, with the library's business contacts, and with other staff
  • Ability to understand and interpret library policies

Compensation:  Salary 60,000+ commensurate with experience.  Vacation and Sick Time. Civil Service Position.

LIBRARY ADULT PROGRAMMING ASSISTANT PART-TIME 
25 HOURS PER WEEK

The Hoboken Public Library seeks a part-time Library Assistant to work in the Adult Services Department. Duties include

  • Working together with Program Coordinator and other staff to create and implement a regular schedule of adult and family programs and special events that respond to customer and community demand
  • Assisting with set up and take down of program space and ensure that the presenter arrives and leaves on time
  • Employing various strategies and methods to market programs to a broad audience under direction of the Adult Programming Coordinator
  • Assessing programs by keeping a record of attendance
  • Maintaining program and room booking calendar
  • Speaking to community groups as requested
  • Additional duties as required

Successful candidate should meet the following requirements:

  • Be extremely reliable and punctual
  • Work independently often outside the library building
  • Be able to bend, climb stairs, carry, stand, move light furniture and walk around the city pushing a light cart
  • Have some working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Windows or willingness to learn
  • Ability to learn to use state of the art audio/visual/lighting equipment
  • Exhibit flexibility and a willingness to work in a dynamic, busy, and changing environment
  • Learn and adapt to new and changing technologies
  • Public speaking skills
  • Photoshop and/or Adobe Illustrator a plus
  • Knowledge of local community, civil and business groups a plus
